We would like to thank Russell for participating and Nationwide Building Society for facilitating filming. Russell is a Network Engineer for Nationwide. Russell has a form of deafness called Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL). SNHL happens when the sensitive, hair-like cells within the cochlea (inner ear) or the hearing nerve become damaged. These hairs convert sound wave vibrations into neural signals for the auditory nerve to carry to the brain. Russel talks about his experiences of joining staff networks in organisations he has worked in. He is now an active member of the Nationwide 'All Ears' Network.
Matthew talks about his experience working in banking in senior positions for many years. Matthew was a skilled lipreader who was able to manage with relatively minor adjustments like using captioning for meetings and making sure colleagues have deaf awareness.
Hearing loss affects 1 in 3 of us, but all too often isn’t spoken about at work. This can make it harder for people to get the support they need.
Here are simple, practical ways employers can make it easier to talk about hearing loss – so everyone feels safe, understood, and included at work.
This guidance urges staff to reduce noise and ensure clear, accessible communication to support d/Deaf colleagues’ inclusion and participation.

We’re normalising preventative hearing checks as we believe hearing health deserves the same attention as eye and dental checks. Our work ensures working adults feel seen, supported and empowered to proactively care for their hearing.
We bridge the gap between those with hearing loss and those without, through education, support and accessible on-site hearing checks.
